Program Coordinators Lindsey Evans and Neal Young have been busy organizing the fall session of the Big Trek/Little Trek program. Big Trek/Little Trek is a peer mentoring program that pairs “Bigs” in grades 9−12 with “Littles” from grades 3−4 at Lura Libby School and St. George School.
Lindsey and Neal have been visiting Oceanside East and West to recruit students to be mentors in the program. Mentoring a younger student is a great way for “Bigs” to get involved in their community and a unique opportunity to make a real difference in someone’s life. As a volunteer, “Bigs” gain experience outside the normal school day while having a positive impact on the community at large.
The schools provide a list of mentees who are interested in participating. The mentors will be matched with them based on interests and potential compatibility. Then the “Bigs,” along will Lindsey and Neal, will meet with these 3rd and 4th grade “Littles” for an hour each week for activities, such as games, icebreakers, arts and craft projects, and of course, snack time!
The program will run for 7 weekly sessions from October 21st through December 9th. Any students interested in being a mentor should return their application to the Oceanside Main Office by Monday, September 30th. If you have questions about Big Trek/Little Trek, please call the office at 594-5095 and ask to speak with Lindsey or Neal.
