Trekkers Welcomes new AmeriCorps VISTA, Katie Jacob

Trekkers, a local outdoor-based youth mentoring organization, is pleased to announce that Katie Jacob has joined the Trekkers team as our 2017-18 AmeriCorps VISTA.  AmeriCorps is a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service and Katie’s placement was sponsored by the Goodwill VISTA Partnership of Northern New England.

Katie was born and raised in Thomaston, Maine. She is a Trekkers Alumna of the class of 2015.

Since graduating from Oceanside High School, Katie has served one term as an AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) Member in the Pacific Region. After finishing her term in 2016, Katie traveled to the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) in Lander, Wyoming to obtain her license as a Wilderness E.M.T. Having been a Trekkers student, student leader, and volunteer, Katie has a huge emotional tie to the organization and its mission.

As the organization’s AmeriCorps VISTA, Katie is serving in support of the newly launched Trekkers Training Institute for Youth Development. The Institute provides training and technical support for organizations that work with youth based on Trekkers’ 10 Youth Programming Principles. Katie joined the Institute in the midst of an intensive 12-week pilot, providing much needed capacity and logistical support to ensure that each day ran smoothly and that the participant experience was of the highest quality.

Over the course of the next 7 months, Katie will be assisting the Institute in the implementation of a strategic marketing plan by conducting market research and outreach, writing press releases, creating marketing materials, and developing a social media plan. Katie will also put her unique perspective as a former Trekkers student and alumna to use by assisting Institute Director, Meredith Lynt, in the development and roll out of new training opportunities in 2018.

The Trekkers Training Institute for Youth Development is dedicated to transforming the way organizations work with young people. The Institute conducts intensive training for youth development organizations on some of the most effective, tested techniques and principles, paired with a dedication to meet young people and professionals alike where they are. This work is driven by the idea that keeping youth on an aspirational trajectory is vital for the future of thriving communities.
