By Gillian Lindsey, AmeriCorps Member, Trekkers Alum Class of 2021.

Returning to Trekkers this summer was like stepping back into a world that has always felt like home. But this time, I wasn’t just a participant, I was able to get a glimpse of behind-the-scenes, seeing firsthand what makes Trekkers the incredible organization it is. It’s easy to enjoy the adventures, the laughter, and the connections we make on the expeditions. But seeing the dedication, passion, and meticulous planning that goes into each experience has given me a new appreciation for the magic of Trekkers.

This summer, I saw how the team pours their hearts into every detail, ensuring that each trek has a lasting impact on the lives of the students and the volunteers. Every step is taken with care and intention, from organizing logistics to fostering a supportive environment. It’s a humbling reminder that what we experience as joy and growth on the surface is built on the hard work and commitment of those behind the scenes.

In addition to the hands-on work, I had the privilege of contributing to fundraising efforts, helping to raise the money that makes these experiences possible. Witnessing the community’s generosity and the commitment of donors has been truly inspiring, as it’s their support that allows so many students to embark on these life-changing experiences.

Being part of this process has deepened my connection to Trekkers and solidified my belief in the power of community, mentorship, and shared experiences. As I reflect on this summer, I am grateful not only for the adventures but also for the opportunity to contribute to something that has shaped me in so many ways. Trekkers isn’t just a program; it’s a testament to the impact that thoughtful, intentional work can have on individuals and communities. I am over the moon excited to see Trekkers continue its inspiring trek of empowering youth!
