Artist Bio

Jon Mort is an acclaimed millennial artist known for his startlingly realistic and uniquely composed colored pencil works of art. He combines his twin passions for history and science by exploring their impact on the human narrative. Jon underscores the role of storytelling in his art by saying, “The journey toward knowing, toward the goal of objective truth is reflected in the practice of making the drawings.” Jon’s artwork has been presented in 20 major exhibitions, including the Phillips Museum, the Portsmouth Museum of Art, and the Sandy Spring Museum. He is the featured artist, along with his father, Greg, in the Island Institute’s 2020 Island Journal magazine and is frequently presented in Art Collector Magazine and the Temper Art Review. Jon Mort lives and works in Washington, DC during the winter and Port Clyde, Maine in the summer where he hosts an Open Studio by Appointment each August. He is represented worldwide by Somerville Manning Gallery and Massoni Art Gallery.

Creative Process

Media: Antique canceled stamps, mailing labels, Kraft shipping paper, tape, glue, graphite pencil, ink pen, and cotton cord. Jon is a collector of many things one of them being antique stamps. He drew upon Trekker’s journeys theme for his Sailor’s Valentine and included package stickers, stamps and shipping materials, new and antique. It is intended to be presented/hung as a 3-D trompe l’oeil. It does contain a small object, but the piece is not meant to be opened/unpacked.
